I'm often in a spot where I have to answer the technical question, "How'd you do that?" When the technology is really complex, requires you to have a really deep vocabulary in that particular tech-speak, or otherwise transcends the norm, my answer is, "Magic."
I've heard it repeated that sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. That's not a stretch. But here's a different twist: sufficiently advanced technology is like LSD: allowing you to taste colors, hear textures and see sounds. Case in point:
It's not enough that Melodyne can visualize notes and chords and let you manipulate them onscreen. Now, with their Direct Note Access plug-in, it is possible for the first time to edit individual notes within polyphonic audio material. This means you can reach into chords and pull out individual notes and shift their timespan, pitch, etc. Whooooaaaaa. We're talking musical genetic material here. Whether you use it for fixing mistakes, tweaking a session without re-recording, or creating all new musical possibilities, this is BIG!
